By the Numbers: Breaking Down the New Dark Knight Rises Trailer

After premiering this past weekend before Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows screenings, the latest official trailer for The Dark Knight Rises has hit the Internet today. Depicting a Gotham City eight years after the events in 2008’s The Dark Knight, the trailer teases societal upheaval, (literally) explosive football plays and best of all, two new villains: Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman (or at least, Selina Kyle) and Tom Hardy’s mysterious, mumbling Bane. Let’s parse the trailer the only way we know how: By the numbers. Seconds of the ominous national anthem played: 8 Melodramatic confessions made by Alfred: 1 Number of mohawked and muzzled villains who prefer the comforts of a lambswool jacket lining: 1 (Bane!) Percentage of muscle mass Tom Hardy appears to have lost between filming Warrior and Dark Knight: 0 Mansions being ransacked: 1 Number of impressively calm prison breaks: 1 Number of fictional football players named after the current Mayor of Pittsburgh: 1 (Ravenstahl) Number of fictional football teams playing in Steelers colors: 1, the Gotham Rogues Number of touchdowns made by Hines Ward amidst Heinz Field explosions: 1 Number of masquerade balls set at the Carnegie Museum of Art: 1 Number of Academy Award-nominated actresses at said masquerade ball: 2 Number of Academy Award-winning actresses at said masquerade ball: 1 Seconds of precious Joseph Gordon-Levitt screen time: 1 Punches thrown by Batman: 2 Number of hovercrafts shown: 1 Number of heavily-choreographed Gotham City fistfights: 1 Number of seconds I spent confused by Tom Hardy’s Silence of the Lambs-style mouthpiece: 30 Christopher Nolan’s final Batman installment premieres in theaters July 20, 2012. Lysistrata Jones: Theater Review

Getty ImagesMichelle Williams, left, and Tilda Swinton With the Screen Actors Guild Awards announced Wednesday and airing Jan. 29, this makes the SAGs the group and show with the longest nominations out in the press. And how does this shake up the red carpet picture? Well, for one thing, there are going to be a lot of Bridesmaids who need dresses! And Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy have now moved up to A-list status, so they will be getting some major dresses offered and made for them.our editor recommendsSAG Awards TV: 'Modern Family' Leads Nominations, 'Homeland' SnubbedSAG Awards: 'Suits' Star Patrick Adams Reacts to Shocking Nomination, Talks 'Friday Night Lights' ExperienceSAG Awards: Jon Cryer on His First Nomination: 'I Had No Reason Whatsoever to Expect I Would Be Included'SAG Awards Nominations: The Complete ListSAG Awards Nominations: The Nominees' ReactionsSAG Awards: The Nominees The ladies of The Help will also have their pick of the designer litter -- not that Emma Stone hasn't had first dibs on dresses from next season from Europe, but now Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will be joining her in that "we'd LOVE to make you a dress or three" category. Though Davis, Spencer and Chastain are not your average actress size 2's, they won't be hurting for major designer offers. Chastain was recently seen wearing Viktor & Rolf spring 2012 and Louis Vuitton spring 2012 -- both looks that are very hard to procure. This could be the year of the Large Sexy Gown: Both Spencer and McCarthy are glamazons who love to dress up and plenty of designers will be on board to help them in their quests. COMPLETE LIST: 2012 SAG Awards TV and Film Nominees Glenn Close is an Armani loyalist, and Meryl Streep tends to wear very simple things, so not much curiousity there. Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams will be the fashion gets for designers at the SAGs -- both nominated for best actress, and both with definitively chic and quasi surprising styles. Will Williams wear Chanel couture (which shows before the SAGs air in Paris in January)? She is one of the few whom the house would consider. Will Swinton have her Euro designer friends Haider Ackermann or Raf Simmons (now at Jil Sander, said to be jumping ship to Dior) or Viktor & Rolf make her an avant-garde gorgeous gown or tux -- or will she got with lower-key Prada, which she also wears? PHOTOS: SAG Awards Nominees And in the supporting category, we can be sure that Berenice Bejo from The Artist, nominated for best supporting actress, will get some fashion love -- though somehow we doubt she'll be wearing any of the 1920s looks from the spring collections of Gucci or Marc Jacobs. But it would be wild if she did! Somehow we expect she will go with what is chic and French, representing her country. When it comes to the SAG TV noms, Kate Winslet, Juliana Margulies, Tina Fey, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara will all have many designer options -- with Winslet getting the most, of course. But Margulies always looks amazing at any awards show. STORY:'The Help' Leads Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Kelly McDonald and Aleksa Palladino of Boardwalk Empire will also get good looks -- if they hire good stylists. That's key here. Because after the Critics Choice Awards and the Globes (both early and mid-January), it takes a savvy stylist to get designers to part with the really great dresses they might be holding back for the Oscars. And only Williams or Swinton could score couture for the SAGs -- maybe. We're sad Kirsten Dunst isn't going, but there are more nominations to be had. Paris Jackson Says Dad Michael Was Only Trying To Protect His Children With Masks

First Published: December 14, 2011 2:21 PM EST Credit: The Ellen DeGeneres Show Caption Paris Jackson chats with Ellen DeGeneres in an interview set to air on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 15, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The images of Paris, Prince and Blanket Jackson with their faces obscured by masks were commonplace when the late Michael Jackson traveled with his children. Though the mysterious habit may have seemed odd to many, Paris, now 13, says she finally understands why her dad required the kids to cover up. Im like, This is stupid why am I wearing a mask? Paris told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview for Thursdays The Ellen DeGeneres Show when asked if hiding her face was weird. But I kind of realized the older I got like, he only tried to protect us and hed explain that to us too. The aspiring actress, who recently nabbed her first acting role, revealed she was bitten by the acting bug after watching her father perform. I love acting, she told Ellen. My Dad was in the movie Moonwalker and I knew he could sing really well, but I didnt know he could act. I saw that and I said, Wow, I want to be just like him, she added. Paris also shared what she considers the King of Pops most memorable piece of fatherly advice. He said, If I die tomorrow, always remember what I told you, Paris recalled. I took his advice and I remembered everything he told me. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Paris will star as an as yet undisclosed human character in Lundons Bridge and the Three Keys, a live action feature film, based on a childrens book series by Dennis H. Christen. According to the books description on Amazon, the story surrounds the war between the land and the sea. The film will also feature the voices of Larry King as King Pom, his wife, Shawn King as Queen Dalina, and Joey Fatone as Paco, a sea horse. The project is currently in production and no release date is currently available. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. 'Bridesmaids' 'The Descendants' 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' 'The Help' 'Hugo' 'J. Edgar' 'Midnight in Paris' 'Moneyball' 'The Tree of Life' 'War Horse' Notably absent from that fairly strong list: 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' -- which apparently did screen for the AFI, according to Sasha Stone -- 'Drive,' 'The Artist' and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.' Those latter two films weren't eligible for the AFI list, but did receive special honors from the organization. Last year, the AFI top-ten matched almost perfectly with the ten films nominated for Best Picture, with the exception of eventual winner 'The King's Speech'; it wasn't eligible. Helmer charged with fraud in Mass.

Daniel Adams, director of low-budget photos "The Golden Boys" and "The Lightkeepers," remains charged with bilking the health of Massachusetts out more than $4.7 million through inflated and fraudulent film credit programs. The 50-year-old Harvard grad, who shot the movies on Cape Cod from 2006, was arraigned Friday in Boston Municipal Court on two counts of making an inaccurate claim and a pair of counts of larceny more than $250. He was arrested by condition police the evening before without incident."We allege this defendant knowingly defrauded people by lounging about his production costs with the aim of creating funding for his films and also the personal profit," Attorney General Martha Coakley mentioned in the statement.Government physiques began considering Adams, a classic political campaign-worker, in March 2010, each time a Department of Revenue worker spotted suspicious tax claims mounted on "Lightkeepers. The romantic comedy starring Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner acquired $32,307 on a single screen over 2 days in December 2009.Authorites say Adams scam began in 2006, when he published greatly inflated expenses in making use of for your states 25% tax credit round the two films.Following his arraignment, Adams have been held on $100,000 cash bail that his attorney told the Boston Herald he could not immediately publish. An excellent jury indictment was expected Monday, together with a probable-cause hearing is scheduled for was scheduled for Wednesday. Adams got his start pointing ads inside the Boston area, later joining track of producer Michael Mailer. His first feature, they co-written and directed, was the Sandra Bullock-starrer "A Fool And Also The Money.Adams had mentioned $17 million throughout the time from the 2 films, a couple of which the attorney generals office mentioned were fraudulent or pretend altogether he apparently mentioned he paid out Dreyfuss $2.5 million, when the fee actually was $400,000.Massachusetts film tax credit program allows production companies being returned over a quarter of qualified expenses. Obligations are paid out as tax credits that might be transformed into cash or offered along with other companies. When faced with lowering tax revenues, film production incentive programs are actually under fire among multiple ripoffs and skepticism that they are an excellent return on investment. In Iowa, the state's former film chief, Tom Wheeler, is discovered guilty in September of just one count of misconduct for his participation in the film production credit scandal. Prosecutors mentioned that Wheeler essentially switched one other way as filmmakers published inflated expenses to collect greater credits. In those days, the state's incentive program was probably the most lucrative within the u . s . states, offering a 25 percent credit for costs. Most infamously, credits were launched with a production to buy luxury automobiles for individual use. An ailment audit learned that $25.6 000 0000 in tax credits were improperly paid out as well as the program was suspended this past year. Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

Actress' Lawsuit Puts Focus on Age as Job Barrier

LOS ANGELES (AP) A million-dollar lawsuit by an actress who claims her job prospects were damaged when she was outed online as a 40-year-old has run smack into conventional wisdom: If Sandra Bullock, 47, and Helen Mirren, 66, are getting steady work, bias against older actresses surely must have vanished.Film stars Meryl Streep, Halle Berry and Glenn Close are also members of the 40-plus and employed club. On TV, the majority of the "Desperate Housewives" female leads are nearing 50, while Emmy Award-winning Julianna Margulies of "The Good Wife" is 44.But industry insiders and unions say star power obscures the ageism gap between high-profile performers and working stiffs a unique aspect of Hollywood's division of the haves and have-nots."There is a tendency for all of us to think of the actors we see all the time and whose names we know," said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the Screen Actors Guild's deputy national executive director and general counsel."But the vast majority of characters on TV and film are portrayed by people we don't know and who are struggling to make a living as an actor," he said.Want examples? Think of searching a movie's closing credits to identify an actor in a minor role, or the somewhat familiar face that pops up as the guest victim or killer on a TV crime drama.Older actresses face more hiring hurdles than their male counterparts, according to employment statistics from SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, as well as the experience of those on the front lines.Women over 40 make up 24.3 percent of the U.S. population, the 2010 census found. In comparison, union casting analysis show actresses over 40 years old get 12.5 percent of roles for television and film. Men of that age are also about a quarter of the population but nearly equal their ranks in casting.(Television doesn't do well by women overall, who are 50.8 percent of the U.S. population but are seen in only a quarter of roles, according to union statistics.)The picture is no prettier when it comes to earnings in the youth-obsessed industry. In 2010, for example, actresses ages 41 to 50 working in SAG-covered film and TV projects earned a total $58 million compared to the $160 million paid to actors in that age group. The guild is heartened by the high-profile older actresses who are finding work, especially on TV, and Crabtree-Ireland said, "We hope that this will be the beginning of a trend for all of our members, but our data doesn't show that."Among the groundbreakers are Close, 64, of "Damages" and the upcoming theatrical release "Albert Nobbs"; Kyra Sedgwick, 46, of "The Closer"; and Marg Helgenberger, 52, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."That's progress, given that superstar Bette Davis was 42 when she played an aging actress on the brink of irrelevance in "All About Eve" (1950) and was 56 when she starred as an elderly "spinster" descending into madness in "Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte" (1964).Compare that to Dana Delaney and her role as a smart, sexy medical examiner in "Body of Proof." Delaney turns 56 next March."It's a miracle I'm still working," said Salma Hayek, 45, whose credits include the newly released "Puss in Boots" and "Frida" (2002), for which she received an Oscar nomination. "They told me you'll never work because I have the accent. ... They told me you're not going to work after 35 or 30, and I've never been busier in my life." But non-marquee performers see a different script. The lawsuit filed in October by an actress identified only as "Jane Doe" contends that "lesser-known forty-year-old actresses are not in demand in the entertainment business."How her age became public is at the heart of the suit. She says it was through the Internet Movie Database Pro website IMDbPro, the subscription-based counterpart to the popular and free IMDb, which are subsidiaries of Amazon.com. IMDbPro's home page boasts that "Industry Insiders Use Pro," which offers 80,000 representation listings for actors, directors, and producers. Those listings generally include, among credits and contacts, birth dates."It's become a really big tool in our business. But it's become a detriment to the working actor," said agent Marilyn Szatmary, a partner in SMS Talent in Los Angeles. There's a growing reliance on using an actor's chronological age to judge them for a role, instead of assessing the age they can "play" on screen, she said."You get on the phone with a casting director and you try to pitch someone for a role, say a 30-year-old character, and the actor legitimately can play 30," Szatmary said. "But the casting director goes on IMDBPro and says, 'No, this says they're 35.' And they won't call them."What Crabtree-Ireland calls "the IMDb issue" has provoked a flood of complaints from guild members in the last five to six years. Young actors can be affected as well, he said, recalling a 22-year-old who, when her age was revealed online, abruptly stopped getting juvenile roles she'd routinely played.Industry changes, including the rise of reality TV series and diminished film production, have reduced the available work for actors and made hiring more competitive. In this crowded field, even a guest role on a TV series such as "Grey's Anatomy" can draw 2,000 submissions, Szatmary said. That's why those responsible for filling roles need to use all tools at their disposal, casting directors say. Actors may claim to be younger and may post misleading photos online, said casting veteran Sheila Manning. ("The photos they are using are, shall we say, Photoshopped," she said.)If they look right for the part they'll be considered regardless of their age, Manning said."It's better now. There's more work for them (veteran performers), probably because the people hiring them are also getting older," Manning said. "I don't think we cast by age, I think we cast by looks. Look at Susan Sarandon, who's 65. She looks spectacular."Isabella Hoffman, 52, whose credits include "Princess Diaries 2" and TV's "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Criminal Minds," tries to avoid being typecast by age and, like many working actresses in Hollywood, looks younger than her years. But she sees the problem in a larger, more intractable context."Our belief system in America is 'youth rules.' That's what people want to see. We've based a lot of our decisions about what we sell, what we wear ... on a much more youthful group."Asked if that makes it especially tough for performers, she replies. "I don't know. You could also look at the flip side." She paused, and then added with a rueful laugh, "I can't look at the flip side."SAG and IMDb representatives have been meeting over a nearly two-year period to discuss dropping ages from the site, Crabtree-Ireland said, with the guild providing a proposal that he declined to detail. AFTRA and other guilds are involved in the effort that so far has been fruitless. The "Jane Doe" lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Seattle, where Amazon is based, alleges that IMDB used the actress' credit card and other personal information to determine and post her birth date in violation of privacy and consumer rights. The actress, whose suit doesn't describe her career and notes only that she's from Texas and of Asian ethnicity, said she was keeping her identity unknown to avoid "even further damage and economic injury."(Her attorney, who didn't respond to requests for comment, claimed in a filing that his client has been subjected to ridicule and retaliation. Several actors approached to discuss the issue on the record declined, citing its sensitivity, and a declaration filed this week by Crabtree-Ireland argued that if Jane Doe's name becomes known she could face industry blacklisting as a complainer.)Amazon has a "long-standing practice of not commenting on litigation matters," company spokeswoman Mary Osako said in an e-mail that included a November motion for dismissal of the suit. There has been no ruling yet on the motion, which is based in part on the actress' anonymity. The motion also alleges that she is attempting to deceive the public and potential employers by hiding her age and tried to make IMDb "perpetuate" a falsehood about it.SAG intends to keep pressing the company on posting ages and has not ruled out any options, Crabtree-Ireland said, including "litigation or legislative efforts. However, we continue to hope that IMDb will acknowledge the harm and take voluntary action.""They have a moral obligation to consider the impact," he said. "IMDb covers a whole lot of people who are not and never will be newsworthy, the journeymen who keep the industry running. There will never be a profile on them in a major newspaper or magazine. But data is being published in a way that really undermines their career."Despite the specter of age bias, Salma Hayek insists that "you cannot lie about your age."But, she added, "I do think people should stop being obsessed about the age of the actors because it takes away some of the magic. You should be able to transform into anything."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

SAG, AFTRA set Dec. meet on merger

Leaders of Hollywood's two biggest performer unions have set a key meeting for Dec. 11-12 to prep a final proposal for merging the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists. Spokespeople for SAG and AFTRA didn't respond to a request for comment about the meeting, which would be the fourth formal confab of the Group for One Union -- consisting of members from the SAG Merger Task Force and the AFTRA New Union Committee. The G1, with six workgroups, has since June been hammering out details such as a constitution, financing and dues with the target of presenting final proposals to the SAG and AFTRA boards in January. Other than touting the meetings as productive, the unions have disclosed only general details about the substance of discusssions. Proponents have argued that a combined union would be more powerful and remove jurisdictional overlaps. Opponents have contended that the new union should be for actors only but SAG voters have been backing pro-merger candidates overwhelmingly in recent elections. Should the proposal be approved by the national boards, members could be asked to OK the merger in a contest that would require 60% of those voting in each union to approve. SAG currently has about 120,000 members while AFTRA has about 70,000 with about 45,000 performers belonging to both unions. SAG members turned down merger votes in 1999 and 2003. Sky Italia exits DTT race

Rupert Murdoch's Sky Italia satcaster has pulled out of Italy's tender for digital terrestrial frequencies, citing an overly long, convoluted process that favors incumbents -- including former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset TV group. "We hope our decision will ... open a constructive debate on a process that risks slowing growth rather than promoting it," Sky Italia CEO Andrea Zappia said in a statement. Italy's DTT field is dominated by Mediaset and pubcaster RAI, while Sky has just one DTT channel, Cielo (which means "Sky" in Italian). Sky had engaged in a fierce legal battle with the recently exited Berlusconi government to participate in the bidding, receiving authorization in July 2010 from the European Commission, which stressed that Sky had already helped open up the TV market and that its participation in the DTT tender would further this process. But the tender, which assigns frequencies for free, favors incumbents by requiring new players to commit to massive investments. The process, set up by the Berlusconi administration, favored his Mediaset TV channels. "We hope that our decision, as difficult and weighty as it might be, provides the impetus for an open and constructive debate on the future of television in Italy," Sky Italia said in its statement. Others still in the race are Tarak Ben Ammar's Prima TV and local players Canale Italia, Telecom Italia and Europa 7. Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com

Contender: 'Warrior'

Boxing pics have long resonated for Oscar, and now it's time to see if mixed martial arts will fare as well."Warrior," though disappointing at the box office (just under $14 million), was well-reviewed following its September release. Though it can be compared to last year's "The Fighter" in its logline -- both are about the inner turmoil of a family trying to make ends meet with a brother looking to make a financial score in the ring -- "Warrior" never received the attention of the Mark Wahlberg film.Best chances for Oscar consideration for "Warrior" likely sits with supporting player Nick Nolte, who plays a once-absusive father looking for a second chance. Nolte, who turned 70 earlier this year, has twice been Oscar nominated, both times as lead actor: "Affliction" (1997) and "The Prince of Tides" (1991).As Nolte's tough but unforgiving kids, both Edgerton and Hardy offer memorable and physically demanding perfs, but it could be difficult for them to break through in a competitive lead actor field.Below-the-line work is all solid, especially during the fight scenes that make up the most dramatic moments of the film.Release date: Sept. 9LionsgateRead the Variety review Contact Stuart Levine at stuart.levine@variety.com

Hot List 2011: The Funny Ladies of Comedy

Zooey Deschanel With its worn-in leather sofa and duct-taped-together flat screen, the loft set of Fox's New Girl exudes the vibe of lazy afternoons and beer-fueled late nights. A few feet away, Zooey Deschanel is cutting loose during a photo shoot. There's some emphatic twirling in a retro-chic, peony-pink party dress and some even more emphatic lip-synching into a toy microphone to a David Bowie track - all while rocking a rhinestone tiara. Refreshingly unself-conscious, the actress is impossible to ignore. "I was the kid on stage in the chorus that people were like, 'What's going on with that one?'" she reports with a throaty laugh. "Sometimes it was a good thing, like, 'I can't stop watching you.' Other times, it was, 'God, get off the stage!'" It's safe to say Deschanel's hearing more of the former these days. Thanks in no small part to the singular talents of its leading lady, New Girl has become a buzzy, critically adored breakout hit. (Fox's highest-rated sitcom premiere in a decade: Check! First new series to be picked up for a full season: Check!) But Deschanel's Jess - a goofy charmer who, after a humiliating breakup, moves in with three guy roommates - isn't the only funny gal making a serious impact on the networks' fall schedules. From CBS' 2 Broke Girls, starring indie-film darling Kat Dennings and newcomer Beth Behrs as cash-strapped waitresses rich in (often raunchy) comebacks, to NBC's Up All Night, led by Christina Applegate as a new mom readjusting to the workplace, smart, female-driven comedies are suddenly the toast of prime time. What's more, all of those series - as well as NBC's Whitney - were created or cocreated by women. "It's awesome and surprising," says New Girl creator Liz Meriwether. "You'd never [predict], 'Oh, yeah, all these new shows that are working will be ones starring women written by women.' That doesn't feel like what you'd expect from network television. It seems like a really good time to be here." Of course, comedians have been part of the fabric of TV since the days of I Love Lucy. And, more recently, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mike & Molly's Melissa McCarthy and Modern Family's Julie Bowen and Sofía Vergara have all tickled our collective funny bone. But the sheer number of bold, winningly complex women currently populating TV screens is a welcome development. "Bridesmaids [proved] people are excited and comfortable with seeing women being ballsy and funny," says Up All Night creator Emily Spivey. "I also think it was just in the air that women want to see a more realistic, fun representation of themselves." If these female-fueled shows ring true, it's because the women involved often draw from personal experience. New Girl was inspired by the close friendship that developed between Meriwether and a guy acquaintance after both went through difficult breakups - though she admits she initially worried whether a mainstream audience would warm to her off-kilter sense of humor. "I was fully expecting it to be a cult classic," she says. "Canceled after four episodes but, like, those four episodes were so good!" And Spivey drew upon her own struggles as a new mom returning to her gig as a writer on Saturday Night Live for Up All Night, which follows talk-show producer Reagan as she juggles her commitments to husband Chris (Will Arnett), newborn Amy and demanding boss Ava (Maya Rudolph). Applegate can relate. Like Reagan, the actress - whose comedy career includes Married... With Children, and an Emmy-nominated turn on Samantha Who? - had spent much of her life focused on her high-profile profession. And like Reagan, she felt her priorities irrevocably shift after giving birth to a daughter, Sadie Grace, last January. "I'm so madly in love with her," says Applegate, in between checking to see if Sadie is taking her bottle. "It's beyond anything I'd ever imagined. I adore my job, but I think any [parent] would tell you we wanna be with our kids more than anything else. She trumps everything." 'Modern Warfare 3' Ad Recruits Jonah Hill, Sam Worthington

Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington make an unlikely action duo in the new ad for new game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3." The live-action commercial for one of this fall's biggest releases casts Hill as "The Noob" and Worthington as "The Veteran," as the two travel the world, from NY to Paris and Berlin, and teach each other valuable lessons about war and video games. Check out the new spot here! That has to be the nicest treatment of a noob I've ever seen. The ad continues the tagline from an ad from the second entry in the series, "There's a soldier in all of us." The original ad included a cook, a little girl, Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Kimmel as soldiers taking each other out on the battlefield. There's even a very special cameo by Dwight Howard, as the next generation of noob after Hill earns his keep. Peter Berg of "Friday Night Lights" and the upcoming "Battleship" directed the spot. He has his fair share of experience with modern warfare since he directed 2007's "The Kingdom." "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" hits stores on Tuesday, November 8. War of the Arrows (Choejongbyungki hwal)

A Lotte Entertainment release of a Dasepoclub Co., DCG Plus Co. production. (International sales: Lotte Entertainment, Seoul.) Produced by Kim Sung-hwan, Jang Won-suk. Executive producers, Sohn Gwang-ik, Park Hyun-tae. Co-producer, Jung Ji-hoon. Directed, written by Kim Han-min.With: Park Hae-il, Ryu Seung-ryong, Moon Chae-won, Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Kyeong-yeong, Ryohei Otani, Kim Ku-taek, Lee Han-wi, Park Gi-woong, Lee Da-wit, Jeon Min-seo. (Korean, Manchu dialogue)After humming along nicely for an hour, Korean costume spectacle "War of the Arrows" lets fly with a second half of nonstop action and excitement. Toplining Park Hae-il ("The Host") as an archer whose prowess puts Robin Hood to shame, this rip-roaring yarn has hit the bull's-eye locally, with 7.4 million admissions since Aug. 11. Reissued Oct. 21 in a director's cut, "Arrows" has now edged out "Sunny" as South Korea's biggest domestic hit of 2011, and scored respectable numbers in limited U.S. release Oct. 7. Fests seeking high-energy crowdpleasers should check it out; ancillary will be robust. Eliminating the ponderous plot development that frequently hampers South Korean period actioners, scripter-helmer Kim Han-min cracks the narrative whip right from the start. Attention-grabbing 1623-set prologue finds youngster Nam-yi (Lee Da-wit) and little sister Ja-in (Jeon Min-seo) narrowly escaping death when their father is branded a traitor and killed by rivals in the Chosun dynasty court. Cut to 1636, and Nam-yi (Park Hae-il) and the beautiful Ja-in (Moon Chae-won) remain in the care of Kim Mu-seon (Lee Kyeong-yeong), a wealthy family friend whose slightly nerdy son, Seo-gun (Kim Mu-yeol), has asked Ja-in to marry him. As bad luck would have it, the couple's wedding day coincides with the Manchu invasion of Korea, resulting in Ja-in and Seo-gun being captured and held prisoner near the Korea-Manchuria border. Perfectly fine entertainment so far, the pic becomes full-on exhilarating when Nam-yi, who has evaded capture, determines to rescue his sister. Previously seen as a talented archer with no focus in life, Nam-yi springs brilliantly into action as some sort of superman with Ph.D-level knowledge of bow-and-arrow aerodynamics, plus the ability to hear enemy missiles and take split-second evasive action. With these talents shown in dazzling p.o.v. and slo-mo images, Nam-yi picks off dozens of enemy soldiers en route to saving Ja-in from the lecherous advances of Manchu prince Doreukon (Park Gi-woong). But that's just half the battle in getting Ja-in and Seo-gun to safety. Nam-yi's cat-and-mouse game with fearsome Manchu warrior Jiusinta (Ryu Seung-ryong) and his uber-macho hit squad is supremely staged and packs real emotional punch when the final arrow hits its target. A major change from his previous features, psychodrama "Handphone" and murder mystery "Paradise Broken," helmer Kim marshals large-scale action with considerable flair. Thesping, much of it in the almost extinct Manchu language, is tops: Park shades his man-of-action heroics with warm notes of quiet contemplation, Ryu is all things rugged as the dominant heavy, and TV star Moon is terrific as the feisty girl with her own set of combat skills. Topnotch cinematography by Kim Tae-seong (not to be confused with the composer of the same name here) includes thrilling chase scenes in misty forests and a riot of carnal colors in the randy royal's boudoir. Excellent CGI blends seamlessly into the action, and the Manchu fighters look great in fur-lined heavy leather costumes. Other tech work is first-class.Camera (color), Kim Tae-seong; editors, Kim Chang-ju, Steve Choi; music, Kim Tae-seong; production designer, Jang Choon-sub; costume designers, Jung Suk-ho, Im Seung-hee; sound (Dolby Digital), Choi Tae-young; visual effects supervisors, Han Young-woo, Lee Dong-hoon; visual effects, Digital Ideas; action choreographers, Oh Se-young, Choi Tae-hwan; stunt coordinator, Kim Sang-young; second unit director, Shin Sun-young; second unit camera, Park Jong-chul. Nearly yearly later, a classic worker sent photos within the party to NY Occasions author Joe Nocera. Michael Fassbender on Sexual Deviance in 'A Dangerous Method' and 'Shame' (Video)

How many actors do you know of who could convincingly portray -- in one calendar year -- a mid-19th century literary icon, a mid-20th century super-villain, an early-20th century psychologist, and a 21st century sex addict? Let me answer for you: not many. That, however, is precisely what Michael Fassbender, a 34-year-old German-born/Irish-bred actor, has done in 2011, in Cary Fukunaga's spring period piece Jane Eyre (released on March 11), Matthew Vaughn's summer blockbuster X-Men: First Class (released on May 26), David Cronenberg's historical drama A Dangerous Method (due out on November 23), and Steve McQueen's gritty character study Shame (due out on December 2), respectively. With a year like that, it's no wonder that people are speculating that Fassbender -- whom I interviewed in NY earlier this month -- could wind up with a best actor Oscar nod for either one of his fall films.our editor recommendsThe Dirty Dozen: Films that Narrowly Avoided an NC-17Nudity, Three-Ways, Hints of Incest: A Studio's Plan to Sell 'Shame' to OscarSex Sells at Toronto Film Festival As we discuss in the video at the top of this post... PHOTOS: The Dirty Dozen: Films That Narrowly Avoided an NC-17 Fassbender first began acting professionally a little over a decade ago, following years of work in amateur productions and study with various teachers throughout Europe. His first two auditions were for parts in Michael Bay's action flick Pearl Harbor (2000) and the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg's HBO mini-series Band of Brothers (2001); he lost the former to Ben Affleck, but bagged the latter (in London), and soon thereafter, at the age of 24, made the big jump across the pond to Hollywood. And then... nothing. He recalls that, despite his best efforts, he "didn't get any work" for three months, and ultimately decided to head back to Europe until he had a solid reason to come back to America again. It turned out to be a wise move. Around 2007, Gary Davy, a casting director, suggested to Fassbender that he meet up with a guy named Steve McQueen, whose parents apparently either forgot the sixties or wanted to play something of a joke on him, and who had co-written and hoped to direct a film about Bobby Sands, a member of the Irish Republican Army who was imprisoned in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and led a 1981 hunger strike that garnered media attention around the world. Fassbender and McQueen came away from that meeting very impressed with each other -- Fassbender recalls thinking, "This guy is different" -- and McQueen offered him the part. Fassbender dove into it, body and soul, and wound up shedding roughly 40 pounds, after which he looked practically skeletal. PHOTOS: Telluride Film Festival: 12 Films to Know Fassbender's performance was not seen by the masses, but it was seen widely within the industry, and probably factored into Quentin Tarantino's decision to cast him as a British Army officer in Inglourious Basterds (2009), which introduced him to his widest audience yet. Then came Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank (2010), Jimmy Hayward's Jonah Hex (2010), and several other medium-profile pics, which collectively paved the way for the actor's incredible 2011. Jane Eyre was greeted with strong reviews (Roger Ebert cheered Fassbender's "threatening charm"); X-Men: First Class did boffo business (it topped the box-office on its opening weekend with $55 milion in ticket sales); and A Dangerous Method and Shame, both of which premiered to great acclaim at September's Venice Film Festival (Fassbender was named best actor for the latter). STORY: Sex Sells at Toronto Film Festival The two fall films both happen to explore sexual deviance -- Fassbender, as Jung, spanks Keira Knightley, who plays his sex-hungry patient, in Method, and, as "an unfortunate character who's trying to find intimacy, trying to find a connection, and, yet, is terrified of intimacy," compulsively spanks his "monkey," if you will, in Shame. While very little graphic content is present in Method, it is pervasive throughout Shame (including scenes of full frontal nudity on the part of Fassbender and co-star Carey Mulligan), which led many -- including yours truly -- to wonder if it would ever been seen outside of the festival circuit, or if it would be relegated to a fate not unlike that of Hunger. As it turns out, Fox Searchlight decided to take a chance on it, despite the fact that it was likely destined to receive the dreaded NC-17 rating from the MPAA (it did last week), and studio reps tell me that it may well end up as something of a landmark film, since most art-house theaters that have been offered the film have welcomed it with open arms. What -- aside from possibly the first Oscar nod of his career -- is next for Fassbender? STORY: Nudity, Three-Ways, Hints of Incest: A Studio's Plan to Sell 'Shame' to Oscar At a NY Film Festival Q&A, he said, "When I was seventeen and I started off doing this, my dream was to meet a director, and to have a relationship with a director, like [Martin] Scorsese/[Robert] De Niro... that would be the ultimate, to have a collaboration like that, and to be on a wavelength that powerful with somebody, and that's what I was so lucky to find with Steve [McQueen]." When we met for our interview, he added about McQueen, "He's just a great guy and we've become really close, on and off set. You know, we have a very quick way of working -- very quick short-hand -- and we're on the same wave-length, and it's just fun." Therefore, it was not all that surprising -- but still very exciting -- to hear this week that Fassbender will reunite with McQueen -- and his Shame co-star Mulligan and Basterds co-star Brad Pitt -- for his next film, Twelve Years a Slave.

David Bergstein, left, and former business partner Ronald Tutor Judge Craig Russell ruled Wednesday that the creditors group can go to create a intend to reorganize ThinkFilm, Capitol Film and three others forced into personal bankruptcy which were overseen by David Bergstein.our editor recommendsDavid Bergstein Claims Conspiracy Behind Personal bankruptcy CaseCourt Re-Closes Explosive David Bergstein Report After Particulars Published The government judge refused a motion by Ronald Durkin, a trustee managing the bankrupt companies, to transform the instances from the Chapter 11 personal bankruptcy reorganization to some Chapter Seven liquidation. Durkin had also offered the judge a choice of disregarding the instances altogether. Bergstein and the former business partner Ronald Tutor had strongly supported the thought of disregarding the instances. Tutor, through two companies he controls, states function as the biggest creditor within the situation. However, the judge's ruling preferred several creditors brought through the Aramid Entertainment Fund, who have been those who initially introduced the experience that forced the involuntary personal bankruptcy. STORY: Judge to Rule Wednesday on Possible David Bergstein Situation Dismissal The Aramid brought group has suggested lending as much as $4 million towards the organizations and restructuring these phones take advantage of the assets, to ensure that the unsecured creditors possess a greater possibility of being paid back. That will include recruiting an industrial agent to take advantage of the roughly 1,000 movies which are within the companies film libraries. Based on an early on court filing, the reorganization would likewise incorporate efforts to undo "fraudulent transfers" of assets like the movies that have been removed from the bankrupt organizations and moved into subsidiaries or any other companies. The program includes taking actions to challenge the greater than $100 million in creditor claims from the bankrupt companies produced by Ronald Tutor and 2 companies he controls, Library Resource Acquisition Corp. and Zelus. Within their filing, the creditors had pleaded towards the judge to not convert or dismiss the instances, as that will reward Bergstein and Tutor for which they feel were improper and illegal actions for example backdating documents, filing incomplete tax statements and false creditor lists. Durkin, who had also billed improper and illegal actions by Bergsten and Tutor , had opposed the creditors request extra time of your time to build up an agenda of reorganization under Chapter 11, that the judge had now done. The U.S Trustee had also filed a short supporting dismissal from the cases, mostly it appears simply because they was not compensated some costs amounting to under $3,000. Just before the hearing Aramid walked up and compensated individuals costs towards the U.S. Trustee. The $4 million will be a loan from Aramid. The opposition towards the trustees request to transform or dismiss, and also the reorganization plan was signed by 14 from the 25 original petitioning creditors. In Honor of Anonymous, 5 Reimaginings of Shakespearean Classics with Today's Auteurs

This week’s new feature Anonymous is alluring for two reasons: It explores the possibility that Shakespeare didn’t write his masterworks, and it looks unintentionally hilarious. If I could dress up for Halloween as Vanessa Redgrave’s line-reading of “None of your plays will ever carry your name,” I would. In tribute to this dubious drama, let’s explore what the Bard’s plays would sound like if they were written or retooled by current auteurs. Ready for Why Did I Get Jealous Too? Judd Apatow’s Richard III A pathetically self-deprecating, but cunning man (Russell Brand) walks with a limp and seems pretty hopeless as a lame L.A. romantic. But after a few of his detractors die, Richard catches the eye of a snappy newsmagazine correspondent (Leslie Mann), who helps assist him in his rise to prominence. As he gains recognition and takes hold over the entertainment industry, he becomes increasingly self-conscious about his decrepit state and adopts the name McLimpin’. It’s about a half hour too long. Tyler Perry’s Othello AKA Why Did I Get Jealous Too?. Tyler Perry’s version of the Venetian moor’s plight removes most of the paranoia and fear from Shakespeare’s tale and replaces them with pesky marital woes. Othello (Perry) and Dez (Taraji P. Henson) have a functional marriage, but their flippant next door neighbor Iago (Whoopi Goldberg, crossdressing and doublecrossing!) finds a way to interject mistrust into their relationship using rhyming slams, vaudevillian mockery of their weaknesses, and a “green-eyed monster” (her disruptive terrier who jumps on the furniture). Will Othello and Dez survive? Or will they smother each other with comic exasperation? Next: Tyler Perry’s Euripides’s Medea. Quentin Tarantino’s The Tempest Forget Julie Taymor: Quentin Tarantino’s version of The Tempest takes the island of weirdos and throws them in a kickass retelling of Pearl Harbor. This time, the magical Prospero uses his spells to thwart Japan’s attack, and the monster Caliban is a legendary, hairy surf champion who doesn’t mind beating up some terrorists if the timing’s right. Prospero’s daughter Miranda will not participate in her father’s tricks until she walks out of this throwback cabana with a hula trophy. Nancy Meyers’s Twelfth Night It’s a case of mistaken identity as a wealthy Los Angeles yoga instructor named Viola (Diane Keaton — in traditionally androgynous attire) decides to become an apprentice to a wealthy L.A. architect named Orsino (Steve Martin). She falls for Orsino, but he’s in love with a wealthy cartoonist named Olivia (Meryl Streep). He sends the smitten Viola over to Olivia as an emissary, but Olivia immediately falls for Viola’s winsome and gallant appeal. That hat! That vest! Those magician tails! It’s just about complicated. Darren Aronofsky’s Macbeth An unwitting protagonist descends into a dizzying, phantasmagorical vortex of power and visibility dotted with mysterious deaths and paranormal events. Actually, Macbeth should just be called Requiem for a Black Swan.

Dancing With the Stars: Maks Fights With the Judges

Maks Chmerkovskiy, Len Goodman "Maksgate." That's what ousted celebrity dancer Carson Kressley is calling the dust-up Monday night between pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy and two of the three Dancing With the Stars judges. "I do understand," says Kressley, "because you work really, really hard, and then you get some scores that you don't agree with and you just want to claw everyone's eyes out."In this case, the overheated argument started after Chmerkovskiy and his partner, soccer star Hope Solo, finished their rumba. Head judge Len Goodman, again feeling that Solo hadn't fulfilled her potential, called it their "worst dance of the whole season." He then came down hard on Chmerkovskiy when the dancer tried to get the crowd to boo louder in response to Goodman's comments. "Don't start all that, Maks, because half the fault is yours."But things really got nasty when Goodman reminded Chmerkovskiy that "I've been in this business for nearly 50 years." His response: "Maybe it's time to get out." That comment didn't sit well with judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who fired back: "Don't be disrespectful like that."Solo's dance got a score of 20 out of 30, just one point higher than last-place finisher Chaz Bono. After the show, Chmerkovskiy was asked if he'd had it with the judges. "Yes, I've had it," he said. "I had it a long time ago. [Solo] doesn't deserve [to be treated like this]."Keep in mind that this is week six, the first week of having to learn two dances, and the point in the competition where the mental strain and physical exhaustion really begin to show. Backstage, Chmerkovskiy wasn't the only pro who wanted the judges to eat their words. Lacey Schwimmer, Bono's partner, was equally angry about what she felt was the judges' disrespectful comments toward him. "They're unnecessary and rude," said Schwimmer. "Every week he gets referred to as an animal." (Judge Bruno Tonioli called Bono a "cute little penguin" last night. He has also referred to Bono as an Ewok and a Teletubby.) "And they always comment on his personality. Last time I checked, this was a dancing show.""I'm actually proud of what Maks said tonight," added Schwimmer. "A lot of us don't get the chance to stand up for ourselves and our partners. I really took offense tonight, and backstage I started crying because I was so embarrassed and so hurt by what the judges said to him. Week after week after week, and tonight it was just the cherry on top. So we're just going to do it for the fans."Bono agreed that "it just becomes frustrating after awhile. You feel like you get judged one way on the show, where other people get judged another way. In my case, it doesn't seem to be based on dancing, or improvement. I'll get bad comments or positive comments and still get the same score."Kressley says he never felt bad about the judges' comments or scores towards him. "I always thought I was teetering on the edge [of elimination]. I know I'm not a very talented dancer. So if I got a 7, it was like, jackpot! People get very emotional when you put all that hard work into it. But it's nothing a back rub won't fix."Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Moviepilot in global launch

B.O. driver Moviepilot launched its service worldwide today. Moviepilot, an online service that harnesses the power of Facebook to drive first weekend box office for the studios, launched its global platform today. The site uses Facebook postings such as a click on the "like" button to build anticipation for movies before theatrical release. The service provides users, who are signed up through advertising or personal recommendations on Facebook, with updates on the development, production and pre-release marketing of select projects. Pics pushed to users will be chosen to chime with their tastes and preferences, based on their Facebook activity. So, a user who previously "liked" one superhero pic will get updates on the progress of "The Avengers," for example.Moviepilot launched in Germany in 2007 as a broader-based movie news website, forming close ties with the Hollywood studios. Ten months ago the company started to build an English-language service on Facebook, tracking projects from the first rumor up to theatrical release. The service now has more than 4 million users: 85% in the U.S., 10% in the U.K. and 5% across the rest of the world. The company is now leveraging that user base to launch an English-language website with global reach targeted at those who regularly watch movies on opening weekend. CEO Tobias Bauckhage calculates that this group, whom he calls "First Weekenders," totals around 25 million worldwide, he told Variety Friday.Bauckhage said this info is crucial to the biz due to the weight that the industry places on opening weekend B.O. figures."The first 48 hours predetermines not only how much money you will be able to make in cinemas, but also everything else in the life cycle -- what the license deal with TV stations will look like, the number of DVDs Walmart will order, and so on," he said."So it is a very small fraction (of the total audience) that has a very high influence on this industry and the revenues to be made," he said.Sites like Facebook are key to unlocking the potential of this group, according to Bauckhage. "We see social media as this big game changer as it gives you the opportunity to engage with these First Weekenders," he said. Contact Leo Barraclough at leo.barraclough@variety.com

Homeland: On the Set of Showtime's Twisty New Thriller

Homeland In Homeland, terrorist plots aren't dismantled in 24 hours and the hero doesn't save the day by slaughtering suspects. Ten years after the horror of 9/11, good and evil are sometimes far from black-and-white. "This is not 24, which had a muscular response to what happened on 9/11," says British actor Damian Lewis, who plays Sgt. Nicholas Brody, the Marine who's become a hero after eight years of imprisonment by Al Qaeda, on the set near Charlotte. "It was a show for its time. Now we live in a world where people are divided about the best way to wage war on terror." Derived from an Israeli hit series, Homeland "dramatizes the collision of two very iconic characters, CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and rescued POW Brody, both of whom are damaged by the events of the last 10 years," says executive producer Alex Gansa, who along with Howard Gordon, his partner on Homeland, produced 24. Based on a tip from an Iraqi source that an American POW has been turned, Mathison makes it her mission to prove Brody is a traitor. Says Gansa, "Their cat-and-mouse game propels the drama through this season." Mathison is the show's flawed hero, a brilliant operative secretly plagued by bipolar disease. Spurred on by the belief that Al Qaeda is planning another attack on the U.S, she's hell-bent not to miss the signs she feels she overlooked a decade earlier. Brody, she believes, is the key. What Carrie sees as she monitors Brody in his Virginia home, watching him struggle to relate to his children and wife, Jessica (V's Morena Baccarin), is ambiguous. The evidence she can't see is inside the former POW's tormented mind. That's where he relives his hideous torture, his forced killing of a fellow captive and the incongruous acts of kindness from terrorist Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban), whom the CIA is dedicated to neutralizing. Carrie's CIA mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) watches and worries about his obsessed protégée. "He cares a great deal about her," says Patinkin, "and he believes her intuition and keen intelligence make her as good as it gets. He's not blind to her moods, but this is a person who could actually save millions of lives if it came down to it." Danes was the producers' first choice to play Carrie. "She has this intelligence, this ferocity about her," says Gordon. Their protagonist was first called Claire, even though they thought the actress would never commit to a TV series. Danes had no doubts. "Television is now a really fertile medium," she says, "and this show is very smart." An Emmy winner for her 2010 starring role in HBO's Temple Grandin, Danes says she "admires" her character, emotional warts and all. "I understand her conflicts and I have empathy for her. She's reckless, very intense and strong, yet fragile and lonely. She's also an unreliable narrator." Finding the right actor to play the conflicted Marine was much more challenging. In the end, Lewis, last seen in the quirky procedural Life, was coaxed from his London home to do another U.S. series. "The show is dramatic and heart-stopping," he says. "At the same time, it has contentious, controversial things to say, because those people who are defending our freedom can turn out to be people that, once exposed to different belief systems, are persuaded by them." Although the scene shooting on a late September day shows a moment of real tenderness between Brody and his wife, in tonight's episode there's tension in the house as Brody grows suspicious that she had an affair with his best friend, Capt. Mike Faber (Diego Klattenhoff). Though Jessica has broken it off with Mike, "she still loves him," Baccarin explains. "She wants to make things work with Brody, but she also wants him to be the man she knew before - which he will never be." As the season continues, look for the capture of an Al Qaeda member who guarded Brody in Afghanistan, a big reveal of an important person from his past, and, in a Manchurian Candidate-like twist, the entrance of political figures who believe the American hero would be the perfect means to achieve their goals. The producers promise that much will be answered by the end of the first season. "We'll find out what actually happened to Brody in captivity," says Gordon, "and come to a more definitive understanding of the guy. How it all unravels will test our basic understanding of who's good and who's bad." Gansa hopes Homeland will be as emblematic of a national era as 24 turned out to be. "It's not a Jack Bauer world anymore - it's a Carrie Mathison world," he says. "There are more interesting questions than whether a Marine is a terrorist or not. If he has been turned in captivity, he's hypothetically in this limbo state trying to determine for himself whether or he not he will go through with an act of terrorism. That's a very interesting place to be for a character." And a thrilling place to be for Homeland's riveted fans. Homeland airs Sundays at 10/9c on Showtime. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
